THE SITE AT A GLANCE

The palazzo above. The Roman villa below.

INTERPRETED INTERIORS · BASED ON SOURCES

Inside La Posta Vecchia: residence, hotel, and museum.

Four original images distinguish the contemporary hospitality setting, the Getty phase, and the archaeological level. They do not imitate the hotel photographs, nor do they claim to reproduce an exact room or hall.

The former Getty studio becomes an intimate bar.

Official descriptions highlight the use of wood, soft lighting, upholstered armchairs, and velvet stools, as well as the connection to the seaside terrace. The arrangement, bottle display, paintings, and vantage point are original features, not merely copies of a photograph of the premises.

The palazzo preserves the layers of the villa.

Ancient walls, polychrome mosaics, marble, ceramics, amphorae, and flasks are documented and cataloged. The room, display cases, panels, lighting, and artifact placement have been reconstructed; this is neither a photograph of the museum nor a reconstruction of the villa in its intact state.

FOUR LEVELS OF INTERPRETATION

One complex, four sites.

La Posta Vecchia is not limited to the palazzo visible from the sea. The historical tour encompasses architecture, archaeology, the art collection, and the landscape.

  1. 01ABOVE THE FOUNDATIONS

    The seventeenth-century palazzo

The central block, porticoed wings, terraces, and garden establish the relationship between the residence, Palo Castle, and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

  2. 02LOWER LEVEL

The rooms of the Roman villa

  3. 03PARK

    I resti all'aperto

Some ancient structures extend into the garden, showing that the Roman complex was larger than the section currently set up as a museum.

ESSENTIAL STEPS

The history,
in order.

Confirmed dates, archaeological phases, and traditions are presented for what they truly represent.

  1. 01

    The earliest phases

An area organized around an atrium and *impluvium* may belong to the initial Late Republican villa.

    datazione archeologica proposta
  2. 02

    The villa undergoes transformation.

Residential rooms, courtyards, mosaics, marblework, water systems, and a possible bath complex were expanded and redecorated over several phases.

    sequenza pluristratificata
  3. 03

    The palace is built

  4. 04

    Inn and posting station

    funzione attestata · dettaglio prudente
  5. 05

    Jean Paul Getty’s residence

  6. 06

    Archaeological excavations

During the works, the Superintendency documented masonry, mosaics, marble, ceramics, amphorae, and other artifacts from the Roman villa.

  7. 07

    Dalla casa all'albergo

The Sciò family acquired the property, used it as a private residence, and opened La Posta Vecchia as a hotel in 1990.

WHAT TO OBSERVE

Reading the site,
detail by detail.

PALACE

Wings facing the Tyrrhenian Sea

The central block, porticoes, and terraces structure the relationship between the residence, the garden, the Castle of Palo, and the sea.

RESTORATION

Marmorino and rediscovered color

The current façade is based on stratigraphic analysis and a comparison with an 18th-century view attributed to Gaspare Van Wittel.

ATRIUM

The oldest Roman core

A section featuring an atrium and *impluvium* preserves one of the Late Republican phases identified by archaeologists.

MOSAICS

Geometrie e marmi d'importazione

Polychrome floors and wall facings in *cipollino* marble, red porphyry, and African marble bear witness to high-quality decoration.

WATER

Thermal baths, wells, and channels

A hypocaust and water infrastructure suggest a thermal bath complex, though its functional interpretation remains tentative.

Cistern

Twenty-four meters underground

A cistern—approximately 24 meters long and 3.5 meters wide—that was part of the maritime villa's water supply system.
